Red Sky in the Morning

I was hoping to get a little further along on this piece today. The tablet I was using to display my reference crashed. Alas. I'll be able to work on it some more tomorrow with fresh eyes. This is a study I'm doing in my multi media sketchbook to further my exploration of painting with gouache. I was hoping to have it a little more defined before sharing but it's probably good for me to allow myself the vulnerability of sharing something that isn't quite there yet. Like this piece, my artistic journey is about more than the finished pieces I create. It is about the choices made and lessons learned along the way.

I'm really enjoying using another limited color palate. I used a raw sienna in my color wheel but omitted it from the palette since I didn't touch it for the actual study. I was thinking of allowing myself to add a blue (I've been using Payne's gray in place of blue for my cool tone) but I like the almost ominous tone this limited palette is bringing to the party. It reminds me of that old phrase, "red sky at night, sailors' delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."
